I wish all was fun and games at Boulderneigh, but I'm worried about Brava. Last night I heard her grind her teeth. I checked her over and could find nothing obviously wrong; when she started chewing her cud I thought maybe it was an anomaly. Rick was out on an emergency and didn't get home until I was in bed, so I didn't have a chance to mention to him, and this morning he left early for a meeting. When I did morning chores she was obviously feeling dumpy; she wasn't really interested in the "lead-the-sheep-to-pasture" grain. I've kept an eye on her out the windows while teaching Brian and vacuuming; she's been mostly laying down, often with her head stretched out in front of her. I have no thermometer or Priobios on hand (I know, how does that happen to a vet's wife?), but I'm going to see if I can get a shot of high-potency B complex into her. All the other sheep are fine; I can't imagine what is wrong.

I hate it when something is wrong with my animal. I'm sorry Brava is under the weather. I pray she perks up and is fine.

Thanks, Jackie; here's an update on Brava. I DID find some ruminant Priobios in bolus form, so I stuffed a "horse pill" down Brava's throat and stuck some high-potency B complex in her thigh. She ate a bit of grain from my hand, then wandered off, sampling the forage. That's a good sign, so I'm hopeful. I also need to worm her, just in case.
Treat her for ketosis. Over finished and under finished ewes will get it the last few weeks of gestation. I give propolene glycol or your DH can hook her up to an IV with 50% dextros.
Symtoms are sweet-sour breath, lethargy and teeth grinding.
Oh, and their appetite is off also...

Brava was very interested in eating hay when I tucked the sheep into the fold this evening, so that was encouraging. She will get another bolus and shot tomorrow if she's still acting "off."
Hope Brava's OK. Loved the video. 'Mugley' fights like me. Play dead and if your opponent gets to close, give a little half hearted kick. Resume deadness until opponent gives up. What can I say, it works for me!

Michelle if it's ketosis they usually perk up within 20 minutes of getting a shot of something high glucose. We use Power Punch drench for it and it works like a charm if the ewe is in standing ketosis.
Love the video! Dozer has it down pat...you notice he just rolls around on his back and lets Jackson do all the work. :-) Love it.
Hope Brava continues to improve. If you don't already have the recipe on hand from Lois at Stonehaven (it's on her blog) for the Rumen Remedy you might look into mixing some of that up and giving her. It's certainly not going to hurt her and might help her if her stomach is out of kilter. It's been very useful around here, esp. with the old ram, who was dealing with acidosis.

p.s. You probably already do this, but baking soda free choice seems to be very helpful and desired by the sheep, esp. this time of year with all the green fresh grass....

I sure hope that Brava is feeling better by now! It's so scary when we don't know what's wrong with them. From what you've added, it does sound like she is improving. THAT's a good thing!

I'd be a mess in that dilemma - It's hard enough to get through routine gimps and being off-hay with wethers.
