Crushing crowds or crashing waves?

No after-Christmas sales for us; we went for the crashing waves!

Since we had no plans for Sunday, Rick suggested we head to the coast to look for migrating whales. No spouting whales were spotted, but we were treated to some spectacular surf. Those last two are my favorites; the late afternoon sun broke out and provided exquisite light just as my camera batteries were giving up the ghost.

Of course the dogs came along, too. They were happy, happy!
Brian got bored with watching the waves and wanted to visit the lighthouse. On the way we stopped at Cape Foulweather, the first Anglo-named site in Oregon. The panorama from that viewpoint is breathtaking! And the little white gift shop hanging on the cliff was the only retail experience we had yesterday (we didn't buy anything).
We ended with a visit to Yaquina Head Lighthouse at day's end. Here we left the dogs in the truck so we could go inside (the last two visits I walked Jackson while the other humans in our party went inside).
If you're still reading, you must love the coast like I do. And for that, if you tell me which photos in this post are your most favorite and how to contact you, I will put your name in the hat for a set of four photo notecards. You can choose one photo, or four different photos, or any combination that totals four. Drawing closes at midnight New Year's Eve. Just sharin' the love. :-)

That's it for now from . . .

I don't need any notecards, Michelle but your photos are absolutely breathtaking! If I had to chose just one, I think I'd pick number five. I like the symbolic futility of the chain link fence attempting to hold back the giant wave. I know that's not really what the fence is there for but from that angle, in that photograph, it's easy to imagine that it is...

I think Brian is one lucky little man to have parents that do such awesome adventures with him!

Wishing you all a Blessed New Year

Thank-you, Nancy, I like your thoughts! The sea is such a powerful force; I love it but also respect it and would fear it if caught out on it. I hope you have a blessed New Year, too; I hope you suffer far less loss in 2010 (unless you need/want to lose weight - hee!).

Ian and are both beach kids. We love love love the coast and have lighthouses on our Christmas tree - Coquille and Heceta, but no Yaquina. I loved your pictures. We'll be close to the beach next week, not close enough. Another trip.

I have to pick a favorite? Since all of the water ones are equally exquisite - both gray and sunny ones - I would pick either Rick walking the dogs, (good composition - the dip, two hills and water in the background) or the spiral staircase. It makes me dizzy just looking at it!

Oh, c--p...now I miss New Zealand and the Pacific there. ;-)

THAT'S how GOOD the photos are, dear friend! And I'm delighted you had a great day!

Beautiful photos!I like #11 and 12 the best. I can hear the surf crashing onto shore when I look at these pictures. I live near Lake Superior, and we get some storms that create waves like that. I am always awed by the sheer beauty and power of nature. I sure would take a day of all of that beauty over any bargains any day at any mall!!Thanks for taking us along.

Beautiful photos! I love the contrast of the rocks and waves in photo #11. The lighthouse is our next coast adventure. I'm sure Brian had a great time. I'm with you on picking crashing waves over crushing crowds :)

I would love notecards with your beautiful photos, but it's so hard to choose!! I grew up on the Florida East Coast and later lived in and near San Francisco, camping on the West Coast. One of my favorite places, though, was in Maine, where the Atlantic crashed into the coast, creating beautiful scenes. I'll pick #4, 12, 16 and 20 - love the spiral staircase! My email (should I win!!) is lostinspace1@q.com.

Happy New Year!

"Loved your pictures of the beach. I liked #12 the best (your last one of the waves) - can you put my name in from here, or do I need to leave a comment too?" I'm copying this email from Tina T-P here so I don't forget to include her name in the drawing!

I love the one with the seagull (10), Rick walking the dogs, #12 and #7, because I can hear and smell the surf in it.

Your favorites are mine also! I can't believe you were at Yaquina Head on Monday!! We were there also!!!! Late in the afternoon before closing to do some photos and our friends went down to explore the tidepools! I wish we knew you were comeing we could have had coffee at the condo! That would have been a blast to see you all!
We leave on Friday and I dread the thought of that...I love it here!

I knew you were arriving that day, Karla, and even looked to see if I might have your cell number on my phone but no luck. I would LOVED TO have met you for coffee, but had no way to get ahold of you. :-(
