Toadstool Tuesday

You can tell it's fall in NW Oregon – make room for 'shrooms!

I'm not knowledgeable about fungi, but I have learned from those that know what these are:

These Shaggy Mane mushrooms always show up in our arena (and occasionally in our driveway); this year there's a bumper crop. A friend has encouraged me to try them in the past, but I've been chicken. Seems a shame to waste free food, though, so after snapping these shots, I texted her. After she practically drooled through my phone, I decided to take the fungus plunge.

I sautéed them with a sweet onion from our garden plus garlic, butter, salt and seasoned pepper, then piled them on toasted homemade bread and topped that with our garden tomatoes. Mmm, mmm, good! (I did follow my friend's rule of eating a bite and then waiting 30 minutes, just to be safe.)

Tonight I dined alone; Brian is in central Oregon on a school camping trip and Rick went along for just one night. There are more Shaggy Manes to harvest; I wonder if Rick will be brave enough to try them!

That's it for the first-time fungi forager at . . .

My husband and I love mushrooms - all kinds - but only from the grocery store. I am not at all knowledgeable and I am too chicken to branch out.

I understand, Elaine; I've always felt that way, too. But these are distinct, with no real 'imposters.' Between following the 30-minute rule and having a friend on stand-by should I get sick, I decided to be adventurous – and it was worth it!

What a bonanza! I am really, really careful when using foraged mushrooms, but they are so good!
