That's gotta hurt!

Early this morning, Jackson woke me up. I had picked up his food and water dishes so he couldn't rattle those around in the night (he sleeps in the laundry room next to our bedroom), but he was still rattling something. As I lay in bed, I figured out what I was hearing. Jackson was playing with rocks - picking them up in his mouth and dropping them on the tiled floor. Mind you, there were no rocks in the laundry room when I put him there last night. I guess you could say he "stored" them for later entertainment. Yes, our dog eats gravel. Not only has he thrown up small handfuls of three-quarter-minus, but he has also pooped them out. This behavior is beyond me. We get enough rain that all acquired flavors should be washed off, they can't be comfortable to swallow OR eliminate at either end, so what is the point? (Well, there are lots of rough little points, but you know what I mean.) Does Jackson have a hankering for a date with a veterinary surgeon? Or does he just need more fiber in his diet?

(The following paragraph has been amended. I looked up the word "mojo" on Wikipedia, and found it was NOT what I wanted to be saying at all! The word "enthusiasm" has been substituted.) I want to apologize for the lack of scenic photos. It would appear that I can only manage enthusiasm for a limited number of hobbies. Right now those hobbies are knitting and spinning, although I'm trying really hard to shove riding back onto that list. (I'm supposed to be riding horses for two other people as well as riding my own horse, so enthusiasm or not, I've got to kick my rear into gear!) Usually I "see" photos everywhere, and take far more than I can reasonably use in this blog. Lately, I haven't seen any; sigh.

That's it for now at . . .

I have a horse that chews on gravel, but I dont think I have ever seen a dog do it :)
Its funny though what they will do to stay occupied. Our pitbull mix has been doing strange things lately; she obssesively nibbles on cloth. Strange because she is about 4 years old and has never done it before. I have started bringing bones home from the store, hopeing this will help.

Our bloodhounds pick up fist-size rocks all the time and chew on them, strut around with them, and then leave them in a traffic path for me to hurt myself on (nothing like stepping on a rock in the middle of the night when one gets up to use the facilities). I've given up trying to figure out why they do it a long time ago but I do know they're not the only ones. I just hope they never swallow one or we'll have a bloat situation and that's scary.

The two German Shorthair Pointers we had when we lived in town chewed rocks all the time and wore their teeth down to chompers. They were my running partners so got plenty of exercise. I have no idea what attraction the rocks held for them.

I laughed when I read about your dog --- I had a pit bull names Tempest whose favorite toy was a ten pound river rock. She would put her nose up against it and shove it all over the yard at a dead run.

Holy cow. Our dog used to chew on them but not eat them!
