Way back in November of 2006, when I was VERY new to spinning, dear friend Kathy surprised me with a box of 14 different fiber samples. (Click here to see a list.) At the time I still hadn't completely made friends with my spinning wheel; I had trouble starting fiber on a fresh bobbin (okay, so I STILL have a bit of trouble with that) and often lost my end while spinning. So even though Kathy wanted me to use those fiber samples to learn what I like and what I like not so much, I wanted to do each one of them justice, spin them up without frustration, and then knit something special out of all the resultings yarns to remember her thoughtfulness. So the little baggies were stashed.Fast forward to today. I had a little time at home alone and was pondering my next spinning adventure. Since I still had a little of the white Dorset Tammy sent me on a bobbin to help me ease into a new fiber, I decided the time was right to dive into Kathy's fiber potpourri. The one-ounce sample of alpaca roving made me realize just how far I've come as a spinner - and how much spinning pleasure one can get from a small quantity of fiber. Pulling out the bag of samples, I chose the baggy of naturally colored U.S. merino roving (I want to alternate colors so it will be easy to ply each type of fiber on itself), and away Louie Two and I went, with great anticipation of the fun before us.
This only goes to reinforce my experiences in life. I do believe there is "a time for everything." (King Solomon knew what he was talking about!) I've been told by so many people (particularly regarding having a child), "There's never a 'good time' to do something - you just have to jump in and do it!" Maybe that's true for some people (although I tend to doubt it), but for me, waiting until the "right time" has been a great blessing. My current spinning project is just one small case in point.
So anyway. Kathy, thank-you for being one of my spinning enablers through this fiberly gift and your many other encouragements!

Hi - she sent me home from Arizona with all kinds of little baggies too - I'm taking a "for real" spinning class next month, so I thought I'd wait to play with them until I'm done with the class.
We had an ultrasound done on Gwennie because she is being such a pain in the patootie (attacking the other ewes, etc, and with those horns, which are much more than most "horned ewes" have - she could really hurt someone!) that if she hadn't been pregnant, she was going back to her breeder. So good news, bad news, I guess - He has decided to split her our from the rest of the flock - there is one ewe that she gets along with, so he has split them out into their own pasture. I'm sure that Pearl thinks she's been assigned to purgatory - she hates being away from her mom and sister... Anyhow, we'll see in about 5 or 6 weeks, I guess.

I am so glad to see you "playing" with these. I remember how much fun buying sampler packs used to be. I had to order them from Straw Into Gold way back when we were stationed in Germany. (No, at that time there were very few fiber anythings in Germany)
