Mothers Day and gardens

MIL's gift; my husband is a good son

Last Sunday for Mothers Day, Rick drove his mom to a peony farm to choose a plant. The one time I was there, probably more than 20 years ago, there were just field rows of peonies and it wasn't much of a 'destination,' but in 2008 they planted a display garden. Now it IS a destination, so Sabbath afternoon Rick took me and Poppy to see it.

Side note: Brian slept most of Mothers Day after staying out all night (now his weekend routineπŸ™„πŸ˜”), coming home just in time to go out for an early Mothers Day breakfast with his mom, dad and grandma. But he did get up that afternoon to make cinnamon rolls with me. He had asked me the week before if I would like Cinnabon rolls for Mothers Day and I said homemade would be better. We used my Swedish maternal grandma's recipe and enjoyed the results of our project on my grandma's Franciscan Rose dishes; they were SO GOOD!
using duck eggs made them golden!

Going to Adelman Peony Farm was like getting a glimpse of Eden; it was so beautiful. I, of course, took lots of pictures – of the display garden, the fields, and close-ups of favorite flowers. I have no desire to plant peonies because they don't have much 'bang for the buck' IMO, but I sure can enjoy them in someone else's garden, along with all the other pretties!

this one matched my spinning!

And now, breaking news. We are going to have a garden this year! Rick put a lot of time and effort in today and got it cleaned out and tilled up. Tomorrow I'm going to buy some starts and seeds to get in the ground, along with some seeds (and the basil plants) I already have. It's going to take a lot of water this dry year; I'm so glad we have the individual spigots and soaker hoses. Let the growing begin!

That's it for now from . . .

Nature's beauty can't be beat. Your spinning is an exact match for that flower. Beautiful.

I do love peonies, mostly for their fragrance, I think. Glad you're going to be gardening again this year. We're starting out the season very, very dry. I've even watered a couple of times (asparagus, onions, new horseradish, etc.) and half the garden hasn't been planted. Here's hoping we both get enough moisture to make all the good food grow well.

Yes, Elaine, and time spent appreciating nature is food for the soul! I've been thinking while spinning that pink (I have a lot more of it to spin!) that it is "peony pink," so I had to take a photo of it with a namesake.

The fragrant ones do smell lovely, Mama Pea; unfortunately, my favorites in looks didn't have much scent! As for the garden, I had given up, so I was pretty surprised that he got 'er done yesterday. He said the soil is REALLY dry – SO unusual for us in May. :-(

We've been to the peony gardens and were enthralled! They're so pretty. I've never grown them but sure enjoy them. Thanks for all the photos!

I love peonies! I had an early red one, when we lived in Idaho. We really liked it. Don't have any now that we live here in Oakridge. I know you can get ones that bloom at different times. That would be the way to do it I guess. Then they would be spread out over a period of time.

You really got some lovely pictures!

I'm glad Brian helped you make the cinnamon rolls for Mother's Day1

Keeping you in prayer.

You're welcome, Mokihana! I'm glad for a blog platform on which to share them!

Jeanne, yes, we saw some peony bushes with nearly spent blossoms and some still covered in tight buds, so they obviously peak at different times. I always appreciate the prayers. πŸ™πŸ»
