From hummer to hearth

After the surprise snowflakes on Friday, we woke up to an actual coating (barely) of snow on Sabbath morning. I was glad I had filled up the hummer feeder the day before.

Flowers and snow:

Poppy was fascinated; she thought it was delicious! (And she's outgrowing another hand-me-down coat.)

Today we were back to spring weather. Not softly spring; the wind was brisk and biting. Our wood-burning insert has been struggling to put out heat; last night we went to a friend's for supper and came back to a house full of smoke (why the smoke detectors weren't blaring, I have no idea). Rick has checked the chimney and replaced the door gaskets, so we don't know why. But today I finally managed to get it working better and the house warmed up; Poppy didn't stay up on the hearth for long:

Note that her ears don't always look enormous; the camera's perspective makes all the difference. Not that I'm trying to minimize them; I love my Poppy's ears. 😍

The rest of the week looks warmer; the fire will probably keep the house too warm. Thankful for plenty of firewood to burn this season and seasons to come!

That's it for now from . . .

I love the fact she has a place right in front of the fire place. She has such personality even in still pictures.

OH! Winter is such a fickle thing isn't it? One minute you think spring is coming and then bam! Winter's back. I hope you are staying warm. I think I might like to just snuggle up in front of the fireplace too. Your pup looks so cozy there.

I wish I could have seen Poppy checking out her first snow! (Rico hasn't had that opportunity, as far as we know. He was six months old when we got him, and he was a rescue from CA, so who knows....) And you're right - Poppy's ears are really cute, no matter what angle you see them from.

Sorry about the smoke in the house. Not a fun thing. But it's good you had better luck the next day.

Have a great day!

Using a wood heater can be tricky at times, no doubt about it. As you know, we heat with wood and are very happy doing so, even when we get those occasional down drafts and puffs of smoke coming out the front of the stove(s). Unavoidable, I guess. But coming home to a houseful of smoke . . . and no smoke alarms beeping . . . ooops, what's going on there?

Poppy continues to be too darn cute. You can just tell she's a happy, little pupper!

Thank you for your comment!

Hopefully we are past the lingering snow time. Spring really looks as if it is here. In the air, rather than growing things yet.

Unknown smoke! Yikes! We had to have new ones installed after putting in a shower. And they are _beyond_ sensitive. Too much. Cooking sets them off!

Again, thank you for your comment, on being prepared for having to be home. I wish we all would keep posting, about how we personally are dealing with this very, very unique happening. :-)

Elaine, I just put her up there when she asks, but it's usually too warm to stay for long. Dozer like to get up on the hearth occasionally, too. Short-haired dogs....

Kristin, the rest of the week is supposed to be much warmer. Today was, although we still had a cool breeze. The nights will be cold enough for a fire still; there is nothing as cozy as wood heat – except maybe polarfleece sheets!

Jeanne and Mama Pea, this morning the smoke detectors went off for NO discernible reason; so strange (and annoying)!

Wisps, we don't always get snow here, but it was odd to get our ONLY snow this late. As for dealing with this very unique situation, nothing much has changed in our life except my son doing his high school classes online. We've never gone out much or traveled a lot; I've always kept supplies well stocked; we live in the country and being here with our animals is where I am happiest.
