On today's menu

This morning I picked green beans while Rick picked berries before the day heated up too much. We are watering constantly, so all the plants are quite happy and producing well. I just pray that our low-volume well holds up to the demands, as I don't know how we would pay for a new one.

Yesterday we hit triple digits, the hottest it's been since 2009 and breaking records for the day. It could have been worse; humidity was in the low teens. My resolve to avoid pharmaceuticals is wavering; I'm not sure how long I can bear up under the triple whammy of hot weather+hot flashes+not sleeping. My DH is not sure how long HE can stand it, either! :-/

Enough of the negative. I will leave you with a great old song and some fitting flowers, bright as sunshine.

OPEN UP YOUR HEART
(AND LET THE SUNSHINE IN) (Stuart Hamblen) Mommy told me something a little girl should know It's all about the devil and I've learned to hate him so She says he causes trouble when you let him in the room He will never ever leave you if your heart is filled with gloom So, let the sun shine in, face it with a grin Smilers never lose and frowners never win So, let the sun shine in, face it with a grin Open up your heart and let the sun shine in When you are unhappy, the devil wears a grin But oh, he starts a-running when the light comes pouring in I know he'll be unhappy 'cause I'll never wear a frown Maybe if we keep on smiling he'll get tired of hangin' around So, let the sun shine in, face it with a grin Smilers never lose and frowners never win So, let the sun shine in, face it with a grin Open up your heart and let the sun shine in If I forget to say my prayers the devil jumps with glee But he feels so awful, awful, when he sees me on my knees So if you're full of trouble and you never seem to win Just open up your heart and let the sun shine in So, let the sun shine in, face it with a grin Smilers never lose and frowners never win So, let the sun shine in, face it with a grin Open up your heart and let the sun shine in

I'm picking beans and berries today, too!

Is it unusual for your part of the country to be as dry as you are? I thought you had as much rain as possibly needed . . . but maybe I don't know my geography and weather patterns as well as I should!

Hot flashes in 3-digit temperatures. Now there is misery for ya! Have you tried the herb black cohosh? You can get it in tea form or in a capsule as a supplement. It works for some women to help a lot with the hot flashes, but not for other women. Trust me though, you don't have to be menopausal or post-menopausal to have trouble sleeping! Hang in there.

Yes, this is our dry season; it is not unusual to get little or no precip in July and August. We average around 45 inches/year, but most of that falls in the winter.

I have tried a lot of things, but not black cohosh. It's worth a try, but it will definitely have to be in capsule form – or in ICED tea!

My Dad's advice to my husband about living with a woman going through menopause, "Get an apartment." He thought he was pretty clever. I thought about kicking him in the ankle. :-) Maybe a room fan would help? Or temporarily changing sleeping quarters, relocating to whatever the coolest room in the house is. At one point, I was ready to start sleeping outside on a lounge chair.

Lovely harvest and looks delicious. Have you thought about natural type remedies? I can't remember what I used but it was bought at a health food store and seemed to help a lot. Unlike my note, eh? -smile-

As they say, "Ah hear ya sista!" I can't get past the hot flash stage, so I am still doing the drug thing. Now I have a new one since the old one costs an arm and a leg on Medicare. So far, so good. The heat and the hot flashes are not a good combo to add to all the rest of the stress that you are experiencing.

Your garden bounty looks lovely! We had the same thing for dinner a couple of days ago - yum! My berries are going great guns, but I really need a sink to do something with them, so they remain on the vines for now. I remember that song from when I was a little girl...thanks for the memory!! Now I have a little tune to hum throughout the day. :)

That's pretty brutal heat - it seems the country has been turned on its ear, weather-wise. The song was just what I needed on a Monday. I hope you find relief from both the outside and inside heat!

We have a low volume well that is being taxed by the hot weather too. It's a constant worry. I dread anything happening to it.
Try sleeping outside... or cool showers before bed. Hot flashes do end. I don't have them anymore but I remember the feeling.
Love the photos.

I never got hot flashes, but night sweats - holy cow - nothing like waking up in the middle of the night in a puddle o'sweat...sometimes I'd go through three night gowns!

Your video made me cry - my grandma used to sing that song to us - I haven't thought about it for a long time. :-)

The shepherd brought two big bowls of green beans and one of blueberries in from the garden this afternoon - I got the blueberries put in the freezer - the beans got put in the fridge - just too hot out to blanch them for the freezer.

Hope you get through this next week OK. T.
