It's a good thing they don't free-range...

This morning on the way to the barn, I got an early egg from a nesting box and put it on the sheep trimming stand in the barn (along with that hawk feather) while I did chores and rode Cohort. When I was done, the feather was still there but the egg was gone. Only possible culprit?

Feeding expensive dog food at . . .

Heh. Naughty dog. My chickens like their eggs boiled up and served back to them. Which is what I do when I don't manage to collect them daily.

Well you did leave that treat "laying" around!

Dogs are such wonderful members of our family....and it makes me smile to think of him staring at that egg and wondering if he should eat it or not. "Will she notice, should I just take it and run, will I get in trouble, how did that get there?"
The final thought must have been......."Wow, look what mom left here for me to eat"

What a beautiful dog!

The face looks too innocent!

Here we would blame the magpies....they eat any eggs that I might leave around, and unfortunately also those that they steal from the nest boxes!

Surely not! He's just too beautiful. Ask the kids. ;-)

Oh, he's guilty as charged all right, and didn't need any dietary additives to make his shiny coat shinier. But I love him anyway -- I just won't give him the chance to steal an egg again! After the incident I showed him an egg and told him it was a "NO." Now if I show him an egg he averts his eyes . . . still, I won't tempt him with my carelessness.

And Pamela, the only kid we have is in TX right now with his grandparents, so I know he didn't pick it up!

Don't judge him until his cholesterol tests come back.

Oh my. Both our dogs (when we had them) would steal eggs. Bad chickens wouldn't always lay in the hen house so I was fortunate to get the ones in the hay rack before the dogs did.
