On the edge of the Polar Vortex

Yesterday was a glorious day. Rick made good use of the weather to sweep up the leaves that had fallen so far.
It's a good thing he did, because today the wind is roaring from the east. East winds usually bring us hot, dry weather in the summer; I guess they can bring cold, dry weather as well, thanks to the Polar Vortex that's running rough shod over most of the continent. After a warmer than average fall, it is suddenly colder than average; I guess that averages out, huh?  ;-)

With a freeze in the forecast, last night I enlisted Rick and we went to the garden with a flashlight to see what we could harvest.

Picked but not shown – the last of the rhubarb
There are some small green bell peppers and another small sweetmeat squash under all those green tomatoes. Since I still have green tomato relish in the pantry, I will let these ripen on the counter. Not as good as vine-ripened, but they will be every bit as good as store-bought – and "cleaner."

As you can see, there are still plenty of leaves yet to fall. My camera does not do the colors and quality of light justice, but I keep trying.
That's Bittersweet, above. And here's the man of the year, Blake, politely asking for a chin rub and wagging his tail with gratitude when he gets one:
I've been turning the non-breeding group out for short periods; don't want them overdoing it on that rich, green grass.
Dear old Annabelle. She does okay unless rushed or pushed; it takes very little to knock her off her feet these days. That's why she gets a protected corner in the fold; out in the pasture I just pray the hoodlums stay away from her.

Those hoodlums would be the three big lambs and Marta, four years old and still acting like a silly schoolgirl!

That's it for now from . . .

I know what you mean about catching the light and colors. I've struggled with that this fall, too. Looks like everybody is well and happy in your flock. Stay warm.

We are in the grip of the cold here but (so far) no snow. It's kinda miserable to adjust from 70s to teens! I have a few old fragile ones here too and I get aggravated at the young hooligans quite often. I will start stalling the two frailest ones at night soon. It's the only way to keep them safe.

We are bracing for it out here. I am pretty close to being ready, although I am never ready. Mischievious characters, aren't they?

I see your sheep like to vacuum up the fall leaves too - The Shepherd was laughing and laughing at the little girls and the sweetgum tree leaves :-) How did your sheep do with the ice - so sorry about the loss of your beautiful maple. We didn't get the ice that you did, but plenty of cold and wind. Luckily most of the leaves were gone from the trees so the wind did not damage them much. Sure toasted our Empress Tree though. XOX T.
