This is a post about spinning, knitting – and the kind of yarns made up of words. 😁
As a child I read voraciously, but mostly gave up reading for pleasure when it conflicted too much with adult responsibilities. In the autumn of 2021, a friend suggested the free library app Libby for listening to audiobooks during a long drive. I never took that trip, but did download the app – and discovered a wonderful new way to lose myself in books while still mostly staying productive! Since then, I've listened to 491 books of all kinds, with no end of interesting material in sight.
Leigh recently listed the books in various formats she has 'consumed' this year and I thought, "What a good idea for a post!" Then I looked at my timeline on Libby and quailed; I've listened to at least 10 to as many as 27 books a month in 2024. That's a LOT of titles and authors to type for you, unless you are really interested in wading through my long list. Let me know if you are, and I'll do it.
I spent much of Sunday with the other kinds of yarns. First, I took photos of my Advent spin mini-skeins and the three main contenders for a neutral to alternate with colorful stripes. I posted a poll in the Advent spin thread on Ravelry; please feel free weigh in in the comments.
The pattern I plan to use is Playful and the photos below show the beautiful results of one in our Ravelry group who knit as she spun to finish this two days after she opened the last fiber snack.
As you can see, she knit each snack in order. Since she didn't want to run out of a color mid-stripe, she has small amounts left over. I want to use up ALL of each color, so I've arranged my mini-skeins into as much of a gradient as possible.

Beautiful sweater, love the neckline design, and can’t wait to see your colorful next project.
Happy New Year!

Thanks, Dee; I'm glad you're along for the ride! I plan to start my striped scarf soon; I'm going to use the middle grey homespun for my neutral. Happy New Year to you, too.
The sweater is awesome!!! And I like the darker grey neutral, but I don't always have the best color sense, so your choice of the lighter grey is probably the way to go :-) Happy New Year!!!
I love your sweater-congratulations!
I love the first choice - looks like a warm brown. But I am betting any of the choices will work. I love the scarf that all those lovely colors are planned for. Such a wonderful scarf it will make.
Oh - and the sweater is just beautiful. I can’t wait to see it blocked.
Beautiful sweater and the fit is perfect!
I confess I'm curious about your reading list, but also, I know how tedious it is to type out a long list like that! Maybe you'd share some of your favorite books from 2024 - what would you recommend?
I just love seeing all those gorgeous yarns like that. And the shawl is a great project for them. I was delighted the pattern was free! I was amazed that Ravelry still has me signed in.
I think any of your neutral yarns would work really well. I do observe that darker colors tend to highlight color, whereas lighter colors tend to blend them. Your sweater is looking really good too!
Thanks, A! If I can manage it, I might try for another Slow Fiber & Fashion SAL/MAL sweater this year.
Thanks, Donna; I'm pretty chuffed!
Elaine, two of you here and the majority of those who voted on Ravelry recommend the darkest neutral. I may regret it, but after pondering and arranging my mini-skeins, I think I'm going to go with the mid-range neutral.
Thank you, Susan; I feel like I've graduated as a knitter. 😁
I might just type it out, Leigh – unless I take screenshots of my Libby timeline which would probably be easier. You'll find lots of authors' names repeated; if I enjoy one book by an author, I search for others that Libby has. Your observation about lighter and darker neutrals is interesting; one Ravelry member shared photos of three of her scrappy-striped scarves, one each with light, medium, and darker neutrals, and I thought the lightest neutral made the stripes brighter than I would like. (You can see them here: https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/jenkins-spindles/4338886/3976-4000#3982) So I've decided to use my mid-range cool grey homespun, and think I've finally arranged my mini-skeins in the order that I think will be most pleasing.
All the examples are so pretty. I'm really looking forward to how yours turns out!
Me, too. 😉
P.S. Screenshots of your reading list would be lovely! And probably easier for you.
