(What was) Fresh on Friday

In planning my menu for Sabbath dinner, I decided to make a pasta salad, knowing there would be vegetables to harvest in the garden. My shopping cart, which doesn't include all available peppers (sweet and jalapeƱo) or cherry tomatoes:

The resulting pasta salad, which includes the first half-pint of fermented eggplant:

I'm ready to start two more pint jars!

I also made this for dessert, thanks to a friend giving me a bag of must-use-NOW fresh blueberries:

I finished plying my blue singles during outdoor church yesterday, and skeined it today. I think it's destined to be a scarf/small shawl that will go nicely with jeans this fall.

Connected with an old high school/college friend today via video chat. She's a fellow "old mom with a single teenaged offspring" facing challenges, albeit different ones than we are. Good to share, commiserate, and encourage one another!

The next time I post, we'll be (short-term) empty-nesters. New adventures for all – except for Poppy. She's going to miss her sometimes-playmate.
That's it for now from . . .

Your veggies and food look soooo good. Lovely yarn, too, which will be the perfect match for making into a scarf to wear with jeans. So Brian is about off! Wishing him nothing but smooth sailing and a great first year of college!

Interesting times ahead for the entire family. Let's hope for a smooth transition.

Your spindle spinning is always so perfect! Always. You posting are the only reason I hold onto my spindles because I think, "well, maybe someday..." I gave away a spinning wheel to a cousin - too big for the little spinning I would do, but spindles seemed the perfect size should I ever get serious.

Tell Brian to stay safe and be smart about health, safety, and use of his time. It is hard when they leave, but they do come back.
Your veggies look great. Whose recipe do you use for your fermented eggplant? I didn't grow any this year, but they are plentiful at the Farmer's Market.
As always, your yarn is lovely. Happy spinning, and knitting.

Well Sue, the tiger hasn't changed his stripes on this, the very morning we're leaving, so I suspect the transition will be bumpy. :-/

I do love to use my spindles, Elaine, and I imagine you would enjoy it once you got started and developed some muscle memory for it. But if you never do, that's okay!

Fran, I used the instructions in the Shockeys' book "Fermented Vegetables." Great book; I highly recommend!

That's some beautiful yarn. I'm still trying to spin. So much practice needed!

I am so behind on my blog-reading! I have missed the fermented eggplant, so will be going back through posts to find it. What a great idea! That salad looks so good! And Poppy looks fabulous in blue...

Hoping you're all safe from the fires. I read smoke was blowing your direction, but only smoke. Thinking of you all.

M.K., practicing will pay off! Don't worry about perfection; just make YARN – any yarn!

I guess you'll have more time for blog-reading now, Susan.... :-/

Kat, there are no fires threatening US, but the air quality is abysmal. The air is thick with smoke and even some ash, and the atmosphere is a dingy yellow/gray which sucks the color (and moisture!) out of everything. As dry and breezy as it is, one spark COULD start a fire nearby that WOULD threaten us, so I keep watch and have the pick-up hitched to the horse trailer just in case.

Wishing both you, and Brian, well for this transition time - you all need to learn how to adapt without the others being there. My first term away from home was a steep learning curve for me, and, I imagine, for my parents. Letting go is never easy from either side!

Rick and I have been too busy and preoccupied, between work and all the wildfires with resulting smoke, to have trouble letting go. Brian IS struggling....
