Fiber and fishing

I've been pretty good about posting 4-5 times a month, about once a week, but as I said in my last post, summertime is hectic. Still, last Sunday we took family time to smell the roses river. I took my tiniest spindle to spin up the last of the blue silk while my guys tried and failed to catch but one fish; still, we all enjoyed the peaceful setting and perfect weather. A scolding kingfisher followed us along the way, and I managed to capture one decent photo of it (along with all the other shots).
In other fiber news, I have skeined, washed and measured more handspun – the two blue-silk-plied yarns I spun up earlier this year. I think I'll use them in a two-color Buggiflooer Beanie, after considering the FFSSA Sheep and Spindle Fair Isle Hat.
Yesterday was apparently Tiny Snake Tuesday. The first of the two I saw, up by the garage, was shockingly aggressive for being the size of an earthworm – it coiled up and repeatedly struck at the toe of my boot!
I have been considering the qualities of my ewes as I ponder the possibility of breeding a few this fall. In recent years I have selected for typier tails; only Bridget, whose only offspring has an excellent tail, and Bitsy, who I don't intend to ever breed, aren't quite up to snuff. Bernadette has the best earset; the rest are closer to horizontal. The fleece quality in my flock is good-to-excellent but I will always strive for better if/when I breed. As for the "if," that depends on the results of the mid-term elections....
Bernie and her "uppy ears"

I'll close with recent sky shows, always good for perspective.
First August fog?

That's it for now from . . .

  1. The fishing trip sounds just lovely. A beautiful outing. Interesting about the tiny snakes, although that's not something I'd care to experience.

    1. I would think you have more and bigger snakes, some of them venomous, in the South, Leigh! Am I wrong?

  2. A relaxing outing, gorgeous pics, but nope, no interest in getting close to snakes no matter how small! You’re a great animal mom, plus an excellent judge of your flock. I wish all critters were treated so well. I too am watching the mid-terms. Dee

    1. Thank you, Dee; I consider stewardship of my animals a God-given responsibility. I kinda like seeing snakes around here, as they are non-venomous and generally on the small side.

  4. Wish the snakes here on the hill were that size. We only see copperheads that are a couple of feet long. What a pain. Like it or not, we do deal with them because they are poisonous and we've had too many of them around in the past year.

  5. Wow that water was glass still. I am not a good snake person. Totally hate them but would not kill one either.

  6. City girl = Oh H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS NO where snakes are concerned. :-D But I am a city girl who really enjoys fishing. One of my cousins is a fisherman and he fishes a lot in one of the forest preserve lakes nearby. He's mainly catch and release - but every now and then he catches a whopper, which he keeps, cleans, and puts in the freezer so that he has fish to eat all year long. You already know how I'm feeling about the mid-terms . . .
