With the gradually lengthening daylight (and mostly sunny days this month), the hens are slowly increasing production. Not fast enough for the people wanting to buy eggs, though....
Speaking of buyers, the people who came to buy three ewes last Friday left with four! Good thing I had spent time pouring over last year's micron test data, because when they hinted at being open to taking a fourth ewe, I knew who I should let go. So Bauble joined Boop, Bonnie Lass, and Blossom for the trip south to their new home. I admit to some pangs, because I thought Bauble was my most beautiful Shetland, and since her dam Blaise is gone I can't try to replicate her. Just the night before, Rick stayed in the Sheep Sheraton awhile after carrying a bucket for me and I caught him loving on Bauble.
After the four left, I put the three 'barn sheep' out in the wooded lot with the remaining girls so they could figure out the new social order and live together. Since some of the 'mean girls' had left, I was hopeful that no one would get hurt in the kerfuffle and by this morning, all seemed copacetic, thankfully.I continue to be delighted with my new iPhone's camera capabilities. On my way home from work Thursday, snow-covered Mt. Hood was shining in the sun so I pulled over at the bottom of our hill to see what I could capture. Finally, a true representation of what I get to enjoy with my naked eye!
Besides spinning navy singles, I'm plying two very different singles I spun last year into what for me is an experimental 2-ply:
That's it for now from . . .
Congratulations on the flock getting a little smaller. At least it will be a little easier for you :-) And so glad you're having fun with your new iPhone camera. My first iPhone took better photos than my Canon EOS Rebel DSLR did! Pretty wild! My favorite Canon was the G11 pocket camera. It went everywhere with me and took tremendous photos, but the self-closing lens cover had a flaw and it scratched the lens over time. They fixed one for me that was still under warranty, but then I got my first iPhone and I've never looked back :-)
ReplyDeleteHaving fewer sheep will definitely help our hay supply to stretch, and chores are definitely quicker and easier. I must admit to being tempted to do a late breeding or two (I have a couple ewes who loudly proclaim when they are in heat so could do that quickly and easily, too), but the state of the world stayed my hand. The iPhone Pro (16 or 17) camera is noticeably better than my old iPhone's; I haven't used anything but a phone in ages.
DeleteP.S. Thanks for faithfully commenting even though I can't comment on your (or any WordPress) blog!
DeleteI sure miss your comments. I thought maybe you could log in on your phone and comment that way - separate from your laptop, but that doesn't seem to work for you. Bummer!
ReplyDeleteMount Hood - Majestic!! Honestly, I don’t know how you separate from ANY of your animals. I know you guys have a limit, and I know they really aren’t “pets,” but setting that aside - emotionally speaking - I would have bonded with all of them - even the cranky ones. Remember, I took the last cat in the shelter during the pandemic, and while she is marginally pet worthy, she is more “cat” than any cat we have had in over 55 years. And yet we keep her! (But I do remind her that she is very lucky to be here because another couple might have returned her to the shelter after a few days.) Not like she understand us or anything. Well, at least the 4 that left - all had each other. I don’t know if sheep bond or anything, but I like to think they do.
ReplyDeleteYes, sheep can definitely bond so I am glad this group went together. Three of them are related, and the other has been with this group since lambhood.
DeleteMichelle, I enjoyed your post very much. I'm a little late in reading it and making a comment. I haven't checked in on my emails. Shame on me!
ReplyDeleteThat's really neat that you're liking your new iPhone so much! My son has one, provided by the company he works for, but I don't think they replace them very often. When I was at the beach last year with him and his sweet wife, we were all taking pictures with our phones. He on his iPhone, and his wife and me on our Samsungs. He made a statement that Samsung phones take better pictures than iPhones! We all got good pictures.
Your picture of Mt. Hood is simply fantastic!
Take care, my friend!
I don't know why I so often end up entering a comment as "Anonymous"! Silly me!
