Cake, Carnegie, and cuddling

The day started out cold and beautiful.

Inside there was baking and cooking for potluck after church tomorrow.

Then I picked up Brian from his half-day of school and took him to his violin lesson. Sadly, on the way I got an answer to a question I asked yesterday. You know; "Don't people READ? Like, BOOKS?" Apparently not. It was reported on OPB today that all libraries in Douglas Co. are closing, including the one in Roseburg, its largest city of ~22,000, because residents have repeatedly declined to fund them. Andrew Carnegie (Brian did a homeschool report on him) must be rolling over in his grave....

Then there was this, to end the day on a sweet note. This capture is today's treasure.  ;-)

That's it for now from . . .

Sigh...I don't think I could have gotten through my childhood without the looking glass, the tollbooth, secret gardens, and a whole host of characters and ideas that populated my mind even to this day. I love to read. I can't remember a time ever when I didn't have a stack of books on the nightstand even though it is a kindle one these days and my newspapers are accessed digitally, but they are still read.
Nice Dog and his boy pic! ;-)

What a terrible, terrible, state of affairs. Douglas County is big, and to think that there won't be any libraries make me unbelievably sad. Doesn't anybody read books anymore???

I love holding a book in my hand, love the feel, the smell, the history of a used book.

My heart hurts about this.

Oh, I can't even believe this. But I must admit that I read on my kindle, but you can also use the kindle to access your library's books too. DH is to the library down the hill at least once a week to restock his reading material.

Oh dear, that's terrible news... I have such fond memories of my local childhood library. We'd hop on our bikes and ride to the Los Altos Library in Long Beach, California with our bike baskets full of books to return. We'd always check out the maximum number we could get, and look forward to choosing more. I loved the way the books smelled, and the library was such a wonderful place. It saddens me to think of all the children that will never have that experience.

Your cake looks lovely! Isn't it wonderful how Bundt pans can turn a cake into a work of art!

Warm regards, Lisa in Lake Oswego

Theresa, Mokihana, FFG, and Lisa; I, too, can't imagine a childhood without books and libraries. I think bloggers must read at a higher percentage rate than the average population, and contributes to how many kindred spirits I find in blogland. Perhaps a decline in reading and the number of people who value libraries is the canary in the mine of our world?

This is such sad news! And truly hard to believe in this day and age. The library is such a great resource for the entire community. I have always loved libraries for the books, the learning, the sharing. I am sorry to hear it and hope it can somehow be reversed.
