Monday oddities

  • Jackson wasn't his usual self. He was listless and weak, uninterested in going outside or much of anything. Very odd for an Aussie. Thankfully, he seems fine today, even though we never could figure out what ailed him....
  • When we drove up to Brian's violin teacher's house yesterday, I noticed a BIG cloud of flying insects over the street. Brian thought they were gnats, but they were too large for that. As I looked intently, what I've read on some blogs I follow buzzed around in my head until I realized that we were witnessing a bee swarm! During Brian's lesson, the swarm settled around their queen in a street-side birch tree. How I wish Leigh or Kim or Sara lived close enough to harvest it! In lieu of that, I called a man I know who raises queens to see if he knew of anyone who would come collect them. He told me to call the local fire department as they maintain a list of hobbyists for just such occasions. Who knew! Hopefully someone gave them a good home so they can go on pollinating, rather than getting destroyed out of fear.

  • As Rick and I watched the nightly news, I thought I smelled strong coffee. Then I thought maybe one of the dogs had peed on the floor nearby. Finally, I realized I was getting whiffs of freshly frightened skunk through the slightly open window beside me! Whew; it smelled close by – first time we've smelled a skunk at Boulderneigh. Fortunately the dogs were all inside with us . . . and they stayed inside with us until morning!

That's it for now from . . .

This is a great mixture to get rid of the smell if your dogs do get sprayed. 1 large bottle hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 2 Tablespoons Dish soap.Mix together. Wash your dry dog with this. Rinse with water. You may want to wash them twice. But it does get rid of the smell.
Just wanted to share with you....it's good to know BEFORE it happens.

A swarm in May is worth a load of hay! You should have picked them up :-D. Looks like a huge swarm!

Thanks, Diane; I've saved the recipe in my dog file, although I hope to never need it!

Like I need more "livestock" to care for, Sara! ;-)

What a huge swarm! Yes, too bad I'm not closer. May be visiting soon though.

Oh, aren't the bees a welcome site? A couple of weeks ago, I was in the yard weeding my garden box, and Charlotte was with me. All of a sudden, I heard this very loud buzzing, looked directly over my right shoulder and there was a swarm! First one I've ever seen, and it was amazing, and a little terrifying seeing that many fly almost directly over us. I sat very still and just watched as they settled in the "crazy" neighbor's burn pile. Oh no!! Of all the spots to pick. Years ago when these people moved in, we had a wild bee hive in the old, unused barn. They'd been there for years and all the surrounding neighbors appreciated them. These goofy people thought they were killer bees and torched the bees. I was just sick about it, and livid! Stupid, senseless!! So, knowing another neighbor had started colonizing bees just last year, we gave him a call. He called crazy neighbor and said he'd be out the following day to gather them. Thankfully, they were moved safely. I love bees and would really enjoy having a hive someday. Such a valuable little creature!!

I am glad Jackson is better - I watch my three like a hawk. What a wonderful thing to witness a swarm! Bees are amazing.

Oh, I do hope we can connect, Kim!

So glad you were able to save a swarm, Lorie!

What would we do without our "dependents," Susan?
