On the bench

Well, if I can't ride my horse, I guess this is about as good a time as any to be on "stall rest" myself.

Long story short. My right knee has been bothering me in varying degree for months; lately it's gotten more painful and limiting. Yesterday morning it hurt a LOT but was somewhat better this morning – until I tripped over one of my son's toys. I couldn't get back in the house without help. :-(

DH and his trusty assistant looked inside my knee with ultrasound and saw lots of swelling, an ugly lateral collateral ligament, and a suspicious meniscus. After consulting with Rick's BIL, an orthopedic surgeon, I am on R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation) and crutches for a week, after which we will evaluate to determine whether or not I need to see a local orthopod (unfortunately, my BIL isn't local).

I've got a lot of things on my docket in the next month and beyond . . . this is NOT a good time to be laid up. (Is there ever?) I did finish the little gift sweater today, but for a closure (thinking of an I-cord tie). Looks like it's time to tackle Mr. Brownjeans.

That's it from the recliner at . . .

Oh! Thinking all good thoughts for you! Wish I were closer I would do all the chores!!! So sit and be good about it....don't stress the rest of us out worrying about whether or not you're hobbling around when you shouldn't be :-)

Oh no!!! Well, sometimes you are forced to set back and let other's do things for you, but what a painful way to have that happen. Hang in there and relax!

Oh, BUMMER!! Sorry to hear you're laid up. I hope it doesn't come to surgery. Take care.

Prayers and good thoughts for you, I hope your knee will recover soon.

Just keep repeating to yourself that you'll only make it worse by not staying on the R.I.C.E. regimen. We'll all be watching you. Bwahahahaha!

Lovely little sweater. (Think of all the knitting you'll HAVE to do while taking care of your knee!)

Yikes! Take care... lovely sweater!

Oh Michelle, even if it creates lots of knitting time, being laid up is no fun. Hope you are back on your feet soon!

Thanks all. I've made it 24 hours and am officially SICK of sitting around! And if you're all watching me to make sure I'm good, who's going to watch Annabelle for lambing signs??? And the farrier is coming Wednesday to trim horse hooves and shear sheep. Rick told me not to cancel that appointment – yet. This will be interesting….

Sorry you've been benched! The assistant's expression is priceless. Not too happy about the situation. I hope it all improves rapidly.

The little girl's sweater...oh my goodness...it's adorable! I guess you can keep knitting, anyway.

From a Knee injury veteran....DON"T OVERDO IT TOO SOON! I mean to be firm as my knees tell me I was an idiot a lot!

Use those darned crutches! Get well and back to normal. I so much enjoy your blog and the little sweater is lovely. My prayers will go out for you to get better asap.

There is never a good time Michelle but take care! As Scarlett said, 'there is always tomorrow!'
Crutches? Oh drat! I hope you are more agile than I.
I envied those kiddies playing soccer with their crutches whilst I struggled just to stay upright!
Sending good thoughts and prayers your way. Be good to yourself,

Thanks, Nancy Kay, I'm very happy with the sweater. I used up the last of the yarn to make an i-cord belt/tie; I should take another photo.

Thank-you for your words of wisdom, Fiona; I really am trying to be good. Not only does it REALLY hurt if I'm not good, I am highly motivated to heal up and get back in the saddle, among other things.

Noelle, I'm afraid I'm not very graceful with crutches, and using them is aggravating my frozen shoulder. But it did help to get them adjusted to the right height; duh!

And thanks ALL for any prayers! I am praying I can learn whatever lessons God has for me in this situation QUICKLY. ;-)

Oh Michelle, I feel for you, really ...... sort of in the same boat, took a nose dive yesterday on a concrete slab, seriously nose dive, bloody nose, two black eyes, swollen right hand and knee, appointment with the tax preparer next Monday and shearer in 2 weeks, and a house that needs a serious cleaning ..... house is going to have to wait, take care, still waiting to hear about all your new ewe lambs.

Oh Audrey, that's not good at all! I hope it's all just bruising and nothing is torn or broken.

My shearer is coming in two DAYS, and I know I can't wrangle sheep. Rick's going to see if he can be here to help, but they don't know him and he's not very patient….

Not being able to monitor Annabelle personally is one of the harder parts of my activity restrictions; I'm going to either drive or crutch myself down to check on her sometime today.

Right after I posted my comment, I thought about your sheep that are due. What does one do when there are things that MUST be done whether you are flat in bed with the flu or made immobile by a bum knee? It's a difficult situation at best! Keep us posted.

It's amazing what we can do - and how ingenius we are about doing it - when things must be done. Hope the rest is working - and DON'T overdo it!

You better take it easy. I know you are not as old as I am and I'm telling you... these older bodies start being a pain in the arse. Let it heal and don't find excuses to get up and be a "farmlady". It's easy to do.
Take care.

beautiful sweater and you need to take it easy; no need for it to get worse or, shudder, for the fluid to increase to the point it needs to be drained.
