Squirrelly

LOVE those adorable back toes!
In googling the proper name of the California ground squirrel (most often called "gray digger squirrels" around here because of their terrestrial ways) for yesterday's post, I also learned the proper name for – and more about – our resident "runway rodents." Our beautiful "silver squirrels" (my label for them) are actually Western gray squirrels, a protected species in Washington because of their threatened status and an Oregon Conservation Strategy (OCS) Species. Now I feel even better about feeding them along with the wild birds – though I've always thought they were every bit as much "eye candy" as our feathered visitors. :-)

Speaking of rodents, it is so nice to have a bit of a breather from the hamster wheel on which I was running! I'm still homeschooling Brian, but on a lighter schedule which leaves room for other things. Yesterday I got out a kidding record book Sandra at Thistle Cove Farm sent to me last winter and filled in Boulderneigh's complete lambing history. I have a pictorial lambing history on this blog, but it's scattered over 1700+ posts; now it is written down in one easy-to-navigate spot for quick reference. I also schooled my horse, caught up on my blog reading, and talked to two of my good friends on the phone. This morning I trimmed Marta, the last of the "bad haircuts." I'm getting caught up – slowly!
Marta, pre-trim (she looked beset by giant moths afterwards!)

That's it for today from . . .

I love watching squirrels! Even more so than watching birds, I think. He has quite the bushy tail...bet he's proud of that tail! We rarely, meaning hardly ever, see them around our house. Too much open farm land and too few trees, I guess.

I encountered one of our Western Gray Squirrels this morning, on the road to town. I love to watch them and photograph them. They play games with us, you know. I quite often see one smiling at me after it has run across the road in front of me. I'm upset and it's laughing at me.
Love their toes too.
Poor Marta... maybe she needs a Super cut in town. LOL@

We use to have an abundance of the little rodents, but alas with three hunting cats, an assortment of hawks, foxes and coyotes, the few I see are usually slinking about like Russian spies during the cold war.

I love the silver! We have red ones here but not many greys.

We used to have a lot of grey squirrels, but now they stay hidden or further away. Too many dogs around to make them nervous.

It's so good to have a catchup day... and that's just what I'm doing, too!

You made me laugh with Marta's haircut! I have always felt that the squirrel's have as much of a need to be fed as the beautiful birds that visit... I just wish I could school the little buggers in a little better table manners! LOL!

Definitely not enough trees around your place, Lorie. These guys are never far from one!

Ours are too wary of Jackson to play games, farmlady. He caught and killed one last year; about broke my heart.

I wonder if yours are a different variety, Theresa. The Western grays are pretty big!

13, I wouldn't mind a few red squirrels for variety; these are the only ones we have at our place. Not that I'm complaining, because silver is LOVELY.

Our squirrels are willing to risk death for black oil sunflower seeds, walnuts and hazelnuts, Ruth.

Yes it is, Mary Ann. :-)

Glad I could make you chuckle, Beth!
