To spin and protect

This morning I finished spinning the Marianne roving I bought from Adrienne. Yes, this is the same stuff pictured in an earlier post, showing more of the colors in the colorway "Jewels of Autumn." It ranges from dark brown through burgundy, red, and dark fushia, with some white and yellow/gold as well. I want to turn it into a marled three-ply sock-weight yarn with the idea to use it for another of Romi's small shawls, but am not sure of the best way to go about plying it. I've thought about trying my hand at my first chain ply (also known as Navajo ply), but wouldn't get the most marled effect that way.

Elizabeth Lovick of Northern Lace had a most entertaining, um, I mean SERIOUS blog post today. Check out her timely advice for computer users and those in areas of hurricane/natural disaster risk here.

That's it for today from . . .

In spite of SpinOff's efforts to the contrary, Navajo Plying should always be called Navajo Plying. Chain plying? Who are they trying to pull the wool over? It's been Navajo plying since rocks were soft, and there's no reason to change the name now! Ok, rant over...

Beautiful colors - I would love to wallow in those! One of the ways to mix up the colors while Navajo plying is to vary the length of the loops. You can also "design" the effects by watching your single as it comes off the bobbin to maximize the marled effect. Alternatively, you could spin another single or two (depending on the # of plies wanted) to ply with this one. If you don't have something in the suitable color, I'm sure I could help you change that!!

I agree with Laura, many ways to Navajo ply and keep your marled effect. I usually use Navajo plying to keep color changes together, but will also use it when I want a three ply when I only have a single to work with :)

Thank-you, Rubyslipperz!

Well shoot, Laura and Becky. If I'd gotten your comments BEFORE I'd started winding off my singles, I think I would have tried Navajo plying. But now most of my singles are wound off, so I'll need to weigh and re-wind. Next time!
