Like dessert for the other senses

Yesterday I was at loose ends in both my knitting* and spinning, so to fill the time during my break at the homeschool co-op, I grabbed a sample I received from Corgi Hill Farm (75/25 BFL/silk; MMMmmm!) and my exquisite Jenkins Jay. As I twisted a leader and started spinning, nearly everyone in the break room was fascinated. I understand; spinning mesmerizes me, too. And spinning with such beautiful materials is pure pleasure!

*I have decided to wash and set aside my marled skeins for now. I am very much up in the air about what I'm going to knit next; if I'm going to enter a natural-colors Fair Isle tam in the State Fair, I'd probably better make it a priority. To that end I checked out Mary Rowe's Knitted Tams from the library on Wednesday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

This morning I noticed blossoms on a rosemary sprig!

Then, as I headed into the garage after chores, I noticed some quail under the bushes at the SE corner of the house. I managed to sneak up fairly close (and zoom in even closer) before they startled and took off with drumming wings. They are such appealing birds!

That's it for now from . . .

Oh, Michelle, I want to come and live at your house. It looks so beautiful! All that wool, and those sheep, and those darling quail. Sigh.

Michelle - once you have washed your marled skeins and set the twist and they are dry, be sure to measure again - it's been my experience that there is usually some shrinkage.

Love the quail!!!

Oh my, I am such a sucker for anything blue and birds of any kind. The quail shots are wonderful.

You have inspired me to learn how to spin with a spindle, for the yarn of course, but also so I have a good reason to own one of those beautiful tools. Although I don't suppose you can have only one ...

Ack!! Blooms....how can that be? We are snow covered once again (and it looks better than the brown-ness underneath). We still have long time til we see any blooms.

Oh MY! It's WAY too early for me to even think about Spring but it looks like it's already at your house!

Patience Nancy...patience....

From the frozen Tundra ~ today's high was 5 degrees.

No wonder I'm sick!

I was surprised to see the rosemary blossoms, too!

Adrienne, how do you re-measure your skeins? I'm thinking I'd have to put them on my skeinwinder and then rewrap them on my niddy-noddy.

Margaret, YOU may be able to stop at one spindle, but I will admit to a few more than that - although not all were purchased. I don't have - or want - the huge collection that others have, though!

Gosh - I hope I write this correctly. . . it's late and I had a glass of port after dinner. I'll take some photos and do a blog post to document it over the weekend if I can. In the meantime, take your tape measure in one hand, and your skein resting over the other. Measure from the top of your skein - on the inside where it's resting against your finger - to the inside bottom - don't stretch it out too much. Write down the number of inches. Then take the skein and count the wraps. Write down the number of wraps. (Inches x #of wraps)x2 = Total Inches/36 = Total Yards.

Because you're measuring on the inside of your skein, you'll have a little fudge room, which is better than measuring on the outside and discovering that the inside wraps were shorter and you don't have the yardage you thought.

That's probably clear as mud - I was never Math Girl, and, like I said, it's late :-)

No, really, that does make sense. :-)

I am a sucker for quail. They melt my heart every time and I love to see their silly little tracks in the snow and hear their daddy call to his covey.
