On and off the needles and wheel

I finished the charity hats - a total of four child's size and one for an infant from the four kits, with the little dab of yarn you see in the photo all that's left. I need to wash them and send them back to Allison for delivery to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Now I'm working on another baby shower gift, a new-to-me pattern from KnittingDaily (Interweave Knits' email subscription) called Cabled Raglan Baby Sweater. What a great design; no seams to sew, top-down construction. I think this is going to be my new go-to pattern for all baby girl gifts.

I have five more gift knits queued up, one of which will be made out of the yarn shown above. I don't know what it will become yet, but I do know who it is for. It's more of that unknown black yarn that I think is superwash merino, plied with some camel-colored llama I got from Tammy Ward and a strand of fine gold lurex. That freed up another bobbin (not that I was short on bobbins), and ended my vacation from white alpaca. I really need to spin up another eight ounces of that for the farm owner, stat!

But I have another pressing yarny/knitting issue. Sock Summit is coming to Portland in August and I really want to attend at least a little bit of it; I'm anxious to be initiated into the world of knitting/spinning shindigs. But I don't knit socks! Maybe they won't let me in the doors! Then Allison at SuperCrafty.com announced a moving sale on her blog, and, well, I had to do my part to support the business of another stay-at-home mom, right? So yesterday four skeins of Tofutsies sock thread - er, yarn arrived in the mail. Now what? I read on Farm-Witch's blog that size 0 needles give her the most satisfactory sock results. I don't OWN size 0 needles, unless you count straight pins! Now I'm looking on eBay for some 2mm Addi Turbos. Yikes! Can I turn at least one skein of this thread - er, sock yarn into a pair of socks before August? Stay tuned!
Even if I can't, wild horses couldn't keep me from attending the Luminary Panel on that Sunday afternoon, the 99th anniversary of Elizabeth Zimmermann's birth. The Yarn Harlot is one of the moderators; if she's half as funny in person as she is on her blog, it should be a hoot!

I think a certifiable knitting nerd now lives at . . .

Your little sweater is adorable....I have yet to make a baby sweater...soon I hope.
I was very intimidated about making socks. After the first pair, you will be addicted - I always have a pair on the needles.

RE: The Yarn Harlot - she was a guest speaker at a large fiber gathering that I help coordinate every February...she is charming and witty and yes, very funny. You will love meeting her in person! Enjoy :)

I like the yarn you spun very nice. And your choices in rams looks like a nice future for you lambs next year!
I need a good ram bad. How are you shipping your new yearly?

Mim, it looks like my new ram will be coming in September with Kim Nikolai. She will coming to Klamath Falls Sept. 21-27. Garrett will be taking my ram to her place for the beginning of the trip, and he has a BUNCH of nice ram lambs this year, including AI offspring. He could certainly send you a ram along with mine if you wanted one! He could also probably coordinate getting you a ram from Karen Valley or Stephen Rouse or Rayna at Northstar; LOTS of possibilities for ram shopping there!

If I might add a wee IMHO...knitting socks on size zero needles is suicide. Especially if this is your first pair. You have an active boy, a crazy dog, and who knows how many other hazards to knitting...don't go there.

I am available for all kinds of support and advice...should you so need...

I'm with Melanie. #2 needles is about my lower limit. But more power to you! I'm sure they'll be fabulous.

I'm agreeing - don't make your first pair of socks on size 0 needles - that's the short road to crazy town! And, if the yarn you have calls for 0's, you may not be happy if you go up to 2's because it will feel like you are walking on chainmail if the stitches aren't close enough.

Have fun!

As others have said, for a first pair size 0 is like gouging your own eyes out with a red hot baby spoon.

I would spin up about 500 yards of yarn oh, 12 - 15 wpi of good shetland wool, and make some baby socks. Then you might be able to knit that other yarn, but I would make a shawl from it :)

It's a very slippery yarn, like alpaca or something, so loosing needles is a big concern, at least for me.

I usually use size 2's. I also highly recommend (people will groan) the Susan Bates double points. These are cheap, easy to use and don't fall out every time you blink because the surface is slightly tacky. They cost about $3.50 a set at Hobby Lobby...

They are metal, and a good one to begin with, because they are a bit longer, and easier to keep in place. Bamboo is nice enough, but most of the sock needles are so short that I have trouble keeping them in the knitting.

In fact, I think somewhere I have a set of 0 size bamboo...if I can find them you can have them. I hate them. lol.

Looks like some great sock yarn. You will have NO problem with socks because you can already knit. Can't wait to see the finished product!
