Just another day in the life . . .

. . . of a large-animal veterinarian's wife. Rick and Brian planned to take me out to a favorite breakfast spot in Salem before my Mother's Day gift of a massage at 11:30 (in McMinnville). But before we could get out of the house, Rick was paged with an emergency, thanks to the answering service misdirecting calls. But the emergency concerned a very sick horse that Rick has been trying to save, so he felt obligated to respond. By the time Rick talked to the client and all was said and done, Brian and I were on our own and there wasn't enough time for both the planned breakfast and my massage. Brian was having a meltdown at the thought of not getting the banana-nut stuffed French toast he was anticipating, so I did what mothers do; I cancelled my appointment and took Brian to breakfast. Afterwards we picked up some groceries at Costco and came home. Rick got home many hours later, just in time to mow our overgrown lawn before the rain moved in again. Ah well; after nearly 25 years of this, I should be used to the demands of Rick's chosen profession wrecking havoc on any plans we try to make!

This evening when I brought the sheep in for the night, I scratched ewes and lambs and counted my blessings. All three of my beautiful Gulmusketeers are staying here for now; we are planning on keeping both the girls and possibly sharing Blackberry with Franna! Bramble, coming and going:
Bronwen up on the feeder (she wouldn't stay back enough for a good face shot):
Blackberry's attractive tail and face:
Topped by skinny, loose scurs at seven weeks of age:
Only four-week-old Beau has smaller scurs - and not by much!
Even little Boo's scurs are bigger than Blackberry's:
Oh, and the chickens all put out for me today. Really, what more could I want for Mother's Day than an employed husband, a healthy son, beautiful, friendly sheep, a ride on my horse, and fresh eggs?

That's it for now from . . .

Well hey, if you keep gulmogets, that means you'll have more next year to share ;-) I don't blame you one bit, I'm going to have one HECK of a time deciding who makes the cut....ugh...

You are certainly right about the blessings. I hope all you Mothers' Days have the same blessings.

Michelle -- I grew up as a daughter of a large animal vet in a one-man practice. All family dinners were at our house because he couldn't leave (no cell phones/pagers then)

Lots of events were left to Mom and us kids because Dad was pulling a calf -- or stitching up a horse.

I remember a high school award ceremony that we were going to. My brother and I were both getting awards... but my brother's was a bigger award. Phone rang -- and Dad needed one of us to help -- I was voted off the stage that night!!!

Its hard at the time -- but later, you know what a wonderful life it is and what great opportunity for Brian.

Hi Michelle,

A late Happy Mother's Day to you. My MD wasn't what I thought it would be either. But at the end of the day I could say that I was so joyful for my blessings too. Isn't that a wonderful peace?

I hope you get your massage make-up day soon.

And your lambs are simply gorgeous. I'm so glad you get to keep your gullies. They are incredibly nice sheep. Such strong hindquarters! Congratulations!!!!!!!

Sorry about the waylaid plans Michelle, but like you said...there are always blessings to be counted. Your Mother's Day sounds pretty much fantastic to me!! We did yardwork, laundry, housecleaning, horsey chores and cooking - oh my!! I would have traded for yours in a heartbeat.
Happy Mother's Day!
